Hanging Sculpture for Hospital
Merle West Medical Center of Klamath Falls, Oregon, renamed Sky Lakes Medical Center, in a $7.2 million renovation and expansion of the 176-bed nationally accredited hospital, commissioned Stefan Savides to design and create a hanging sculpture as a focal point for its main lobby. The Savides sculpture consists of 48 Forsters Terns, each Tern suspended from a canopy in the main lobby by two lines of 16 gauge braided, stainless steel cable. Ron Larson photo The imposing sculpture, titled "A Swirl of Terns," hangs 30 feet from a three-story atrium stairwell ceiling and has a 10-foot diameter. Metal support art was fabricated by Rick Howland of Ironhorse Art Studio of Klamath Falls. The Tern sculpture is a centerpiece for the hospital, reflecting the hospital's orientation to a healing atmosphere. Meditation rooms, an outdoor garden, courtyards, art nooks and water features are also parts of the architectural approach.
A 7-foot bronze monument depicting the American White Pelican, symbol of Kalmath Falls, Oregon, graces the entrance to the city. Earlier, copies in polystyrene were cast for a civic event during which local artists were asked to decorate the pelicans. Many exciting works resulted, some of which can be seen in an accompanying gallery. Click to see The Decorated Pelicans and the artists who painted them. A bronze miniature of this work, 15-inches tall, is available.
